Some weeks ago, I promised to write up a review of a talk/paper for one of the conferences on campus. The following e-mail just arrived from the coordinator, to me and three other laggards:

Hey guys,

Any chance you could send along your review of the conference lecture you agreed to earlier in the quarter when it seemed doable and like a reasonable request?

Hope all is well with everyone.

Numerous insights can be gleaned from this e-mail.

1. The person who sent that e-mail is wise indeed to the ways of people like me.
2. It’s not just me who is behind on everything, or who foolishly agreed to things when they “seemed doable and like a reasonable request” and now regrets it.
And, from 1, 2,
3. Perhaps there is hope for humanity.
