This week in bay area music

Are you in the San Francisco bay area? Do you want to hear really good music? Go to Yoshi’s in Oakland on Tuesday or Wednesday for Robert Walter. (Also listen to some tunes and see his schedule on his (god help us all) myspace.) He’s a jazz-funk virtuoso, and he’s coming to town with a band that includes two of the absolute best musicians in New Orleans — Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton. Both of those guys are absolutely amazing musicians — when I lived in New Orleans, I used to listen to both constantly. Together, they basically sound like the return of the Meters. So go to Yoshi’s. If you’re (un)lucky, you might see me there one of those days. Or, hell, both of those days, though Jazz Mafia Tuesdays at Bruno’s is always a good choice that night. (Oh bugger, the Jazz Mafia page tells me I just missed Eric Lindell… that’s a shame, he’s another fabulous New Orleans musician, former constant denizen of the Circle Bar, hipster central in NOLA…)
