The worst kind of indecision.

Have you ever been torn between bad motivations? Example: you’re tempted to go to Indianapolis in order to beat up someone you don’t like, but you’re tempted not to go to Indianapolis because you’re afraid of him. There’s a weird kind of reasoning process that happens if you’re a semi-reflective sort of person. “If the only reason I want to go to Indy is to beat up that asshole, then I shouldn’t go to Indy. But if the only reason I don’t want to go to Indy is because I’m afraid that asshole will beat me up, then I should go to Indy!”

What does one do when one suspects that one’s motivation to take any alternative is given by a discreditable reason? Other, that is, than consciously attempt to change one’s motivations?
