Take an extremely short notice excuse to go to Oslo.

A conference that covers hotel accommodations! That’s so tempting that I’m contemplating whipping out an abstract for something on the insanely short notice…

Call for papers: January 2010 International Conference in Oslo
Introduction image

The Research Programme on Democracy at the University of Oslo is organizing its first international conference on “Democracy as Idea and Practice” which will be held on January 14-15, 2010.
Published Aug 20, 2009

The conference is organized with a plenary session and several workshops (over two days) and various panels. We invite paper and panel proposals on a wide range of topics related to multilevel democracy, constitutional democracy, cultural preconditions for democracy and democratic participation. Panel sessions (1 hour and 45 minutes) should typically include 3-5 papers and discussants. We also invite paper proposals to the following five workshops:

(1) Representation and Deliberation in a Multilevel Polity

(2) Should States Ratify Human Rights Conventions?

(3) Changes in the Relations between Law and Politics – Consequences for Democracy

(4) Public Reason and Political Legitimacy

(5) Digital Media and Democracy

More information can be found here.

This conference is primarily aimed at scholars in law, humanities and the social sciences, but researchers from other disciplines also are welcome to attend. We will only be able to support travel for a small number of participants but will cover hotel accommodation at least for paper presenters, discussants and chairs (at one of the conference hotels). Everyone who attends will be welcome to a reception on Thursday evening, as well as lunches on Thursday and Friday.
